New Phase of Support for Katrina Survivors

Washington, DC (August 25, 2008) Three years after Hurricane Katrina, the Katrina Information Network (KIN) will launch a new phase in its just recovery campaign – a grassroots corporate accountability effort and new web tools that give everyone an opportunity to show their support for just recovery.

"Our goal is to give people around the country user friendly tools to demand that local and national politicians support and fund a fair and just recovery," said Dr. James White, chair of KIN’s National Advisory Board.

KIN will ratchet up its efforts to hold accountable the 11 companies found by Congress to have overcharged taxpayers and placed the lives of Hurricane Katrina survivors at risk; and engage people to make a difference for Katrina survivors through KIN’s 29 for the 29th, a list of recommended actions.

"Katrinaaction.org moves beyond facts about the destruction and displacement that persists since Hurricane Katrina, and moves people to advocate in their own city, town or state on behalf of New Orleans," said Dr. White.

KIN’s 29 for the 29th are designed to provide everyone – regardless of how much time they may have – opportunities to support the rebuilding effort and help keep New Orleans in the public eye and at the center of national conversation.

Some highlights from KIN’s 29 for the 29th list:

  • Take part in commemorative events near you. Visit http://www.katrinaaction.org for local listings.
  • Make sure your place of worship, on campus, organization, etc., is not doing business with companies that have profiteered off of Katrina and its aftermath. Visit http://www.katrinaaction.org for a list of companies cited by Congress for overcharging federal contracts.
  • Get ten others to call your city council member to support KIN’s Resolution.
The website also provides information about the 11 companies found to have misused tax dollars, and KIN’s Resolution for state and local jurisdictions to adopt to help advance just recovery. Ordinances have already been enacted in Atlantic City, NJ, Erie, PA, and Milwaukee County, WI with several cities with proposed legislation in progress.
