Join the People's Evacuation Plan

Our experience with Hurricane Gustav last year has taught us that our communities cannot depend on the government’s provisions alone. We are acting to ensure that our folks are not subject to the widespread discrimination, criminalization and post-evacuation economic disasters as they have been in the past.

That is why we are reaching out to our networks in the top cities where we tend to evacuate in order to prepare some provisions ahead of time, just in case. This grassroots preparation and support is what we are calling The People’s Evacuation Plan. Here’s how you can help:

Are there resources that you can help us put in place like hotel rooms, dorms, and other forms of emergency housing?

Tell Congressman Clay to Hold Hearings on Katrina Census Issues

Katrina and Ritas survivors have faced red tape and the runaround for the last four years and now their communities are facing the prospect of losing millions in federal funds and their voice in government. If Congress does not act soon to pass special provisions for how displaced residents are counted in the Census, those actively working to return will be counted where they happen to stay on the day of the census, not where they call home.

Act Now To Develop The Workers Right to Return Act

What If by staying in your home when a hurricane threatens you risk losing your LIFE but by seeking safer grounds you risk losing your JOB?

It doesn't have to be that way. Act now to sign Restaurant Opportunities Center's petition for Workers' Right to Return. It's a simple, fair way to guarantee workers have seven days window..."

Your support will protect the jobs of New Orleans workers who in times of mandatory evacuation must leave their lives behind. Together, we can help workers return to their jobs without fear of retaliation.

Tell Congress To Pass The Gulf Coast Civic Works Act

Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren has re-introduced H.R. 2269: Gulf Coast Civic Recovery Act. This legislation will rebuild the infrastructure that was devastated, create the green jobs that we voted for when we elected President Obama and help the most crippled region in the area begin the steps to recovery.

Thank you for everything that you do.

Get a Just Recovery Resolution Passed

In the three years following Hurricane Katrina we have seen policymakers and corporations profiting unfairly while many survivors are organizing, standing up and fighting for themselves, and determined to secure the necessary resources for Just Recovery . They need and deserve our support. Help get your local government or statewide or national organizations to pass a KIN resolution.
